Exploring Castle Ravenloft

The adventurers began to explore the cellars of Castle Ravenloft in an attempt to find a way down into the crypts. There was no sign of Bryngar who was presumably kidnapped by Strahd.

They then encountered the paladin Lucian in a chamber that they believe holds the Symbol of Ravenkind. Lucian claimed he was using magic to stop Strahd from detecting him but he had been unable to escape the castle. Lord Vorek was not convinced as he began to think he had been in this chamber before (or had least viewed it from the door) and had never encountered Lucian but he never got to voice his concerns as the group were unexpectedly plunged into darkness and attacked by greater shadows. Lucian also started to attack them and some supernatural fear effect sent Vespasian and Lord Vorek running. A dangerous fight ensued and eventually Lucian and the shadows were destroyed. But it was not all over as a fireball was launched into the room and something tried to possess Mordovan.

Meanwhile Lord Vorek and Vespasian had overcome the fear but shortly after Vorek was kidnapped and whisked away up into the tall tower by an unseen adversary (presumably Strahd). Vespasian tried to get back to the group but felt something evil was lurking ahead. He sent two fireballs into a chamber and hurt something there. The rest of the group came out of the room where they had fought Lucian (and they had also recovered the Symbol of Ravenkind) just in time to see Vespasian being whisked off his feet by some unseen force and wizzed up some stairs and up into one of the tall towers. The force that had hold of him dropped him sending him plunging towards his death. Ferula managed to place a windwall beneath him a few seconds before he hit the ground. His fall was cushioned although he wasn’t completely unscathed.

The group were now weakened (in Vespasian and Yanev’s case literally thanks to the shadows) and desperate not to have anymore unessecary encounters. Blood dripping from the tall tower dissuaded them from going that way so they began searching for secret doors and cautiously trying other routes. They tried the flooded area at the base of the castle which presumably connects to the crypts. Mordovan scouted ahead using the cloak of the manta ray but was attacked by ghouls or zombies that tried to drag him under the water and kill him. He squirmed free and made his way back to the group. The adventurers decided to try alternative routes.

They found themselves back in the dining hall where Gredarin seemed to be in a magical sleep (this state made him appear dead) and the two Machavec women were missing. Blood marks near the door did not bode well. It was decided that the blocked off stairs from the chapel would be the best route down and so they headed that way. At this point they came across Bryngar hacking at a body with his axe. He is covered in blood, and dismembered limbs and body parts are everywhere. The body is that of Lady Alissa Machavec…

The Horrors of Castle Ravenloft

The adventurers began to explore the castle in an attempt to circumvent the trap that had triggered down in the cellars. Unnerving noises, an eerie darkness and unseen supernatural forces were at their heels as they went. They went up the castle and had a brief encounter with Strahd in the Audience Hall. He left them a book for them to read so as they could understand his past and what drove him to his current condition. They then proceeded to search Strahd’s quarters on the floor above. They encountered the untouched remains of a wedding reception, which spoke of the ill-fated wedding of Tatayana and Strahd’s brother (before Strahd killed him and Tatayana committed suicide) and then entered a study where Strahd awaited them. Madame Eva had spoke of such a room and that they must avoid any confrontation with Strahd here so they retreated.

They searched a bathroom and closet and used the ring of x-ray vision to examine an adjoining bedroom where a woman lay on a grand bed. Rather than face this encounter, suspecting she may be a vampire, they continued up the tower and came into combat with a supernatural painting and the spirit possessing it. The spirit was routed and the painting covered up with a blanket. Ferula’s keen elven eye sight then spotted a trap door in the floor of the landing and below they discovered a shaft and trapworks. These trapworks work the very trap that had blocked their path originally down in the cellar. Vespasian and Mordovan attempted to reset the trap and block it from being used again. While doing so they were attacked by wraiths and Vespasian was drained. Yanev used a restoration to bring back his life force.

Once the trap was reset and blocked from triggering the group descended back into the cellars. They began to explore and as they searched an old guard mess hall they heard strange heavy footsteps heading their way. They made ready but suddenly the footsteps receded and before they could breath a sigh of relief a side door opened by itself and a cold supernatural entity came into the room spooking Bryngar and Vespasian. Bryngar made for the far door and once through a cloak dropped over him and he was suddenly gone. Vespasian went to give chase but Bryngar was nowhere to be seen….

Night in the Misty Hollows

ADVENTURERS – Yanev, Tobbin, Bryngar, Ferula, Vespasian, Mordovan

The adventurers needed rest desperately as the encounter with the Bodak had taken its toll. Yanev used the power invested in him by the god Tiros to dismiss the negative energy that was eating away at Bryngar’s soul but there was little he could do to help the others. Time was against them all and maybe after a good night’s rest Yanev could do something to alleviate the draining inflicted on the others. The adventurers rested in the old dragon’s lair at the entrance to the old crypt/temple, putting back in place the boulders that barricaded the doors into the accursed place.

Half way through their rest some creature began crashing its weight against the doors, attempting to smash them open. The adventurers awoke and backed off into the natural cavern that connected to the outside world. This was filled with an unnatural fog and they became separated. It quickly became obvious that some humanoid creatures were in the fog, unhindered by it, and striking out at the adventurers. The characters defended themselves blindly swinging out wildly at anything that came near. Suddenly the bag of holding carried by Bryngar was snatched and the creatures made a run for it. The only course of action was to give chase as the bag held most of their treasure. Tobbin released fireball after fireball at the thieves using the guidance of Ferula who had summoned a dire bat to help locate and attack the creatures. A leader of these unknown humanoids managed to get hold of the bag off one of its dead compatriots and made for the undergrowth outside the cavern. Moldovan was the quickest and had survived the effects of the friendly fire (the fireballs) thanks to his instinctive ability to evade. He ran the creature through and reclaimed the bag of holding.

The adventurers eventually got a good night’s rest and Yanev was able to restore his companions to full health and spirit. A part of them was slipping away, drained by the bodak and only the divine power of Tiros prevented it. They then re-entered the crypt/temple and began exploring again, using caution so as not to be surprised as they had been by the bodak. The checked out the dead body of an elf and found a journal relating to a band of elves led by Ferula’s father. Apparently a sacred tree in the Tauth forest had been desecrated and a seed stolen from it. Ferula’s father had taken it upon himself to hunt down the perpetrators and recover the seed. It appears the seed is to be used by a cult of Berras to open a gate to the abyss and bring a horde of demons into this world. The seed is but one artefact that is required to bring this about.

The adventurers eventually came across a stone bridge crossing a large tar pit. They were attacked by a couple of xorn that caused a few problems but were eventually defeated.
